 　そもそもの目的は、本来の自分を理解することです。そのためには、物的身体の機能と霊としての資質を存分に発揮することが必要です。物的なことに偏って、霊的存在としての義務をおろそかにするのもいけませんが、霊的なことに偏って物的存在としての義務をおろそかにするのも間違いです。両者のバランスをとり、この世にありながら、この世的人間に堕することのないようにすべきです。

　肉体は神の分身である霊の神殿ですから、十分な手入れが必要です。そして成長と進化の過程にある霊は、その肉体を通して、成長と進化のための機会を与えられる必要があります。

　地上生活の目的は、霊性を活気づけることです。そのために、地上界の出来事は二面性と二極性を鮮烈に体験するようになっており、そこに地上生活の地上生活たるゆえんがあるのです。たとえば、善と善でないものが同居しています。これは、私たちの世界にはないことです。高次元の世界には、対照的なものが存在しないのです。

　どういうかたちでもよろしい。摂理の霊的な意味を教えてあげることでも、お腹をすかしている人に食べるものを与えてあげることでも、あるいは暗い思いに沈んでいる人を明るい気持ちにしてあげることでもよろしい。つまりは、その人のためになることであれば、どんなことでもよいのです。


自分のことをあとまわしにしてでも、他人のために役立つことをする術を身につければ、それだけ内部の霊性、すなわち大霊が発現することになるのです。ことは、簡単なのです。

　本書を手にして「まえがき」と「編者まえがき」に目を通した時、シルバーバーチの霊言集がほとんど廃刊となった今でも、英国において「霊的真理普及財団」や「勉強会」という形で脈々と生き続けていることを知ってうれしかった。　

　人間は形而上的にも形而下的にも 「なぜ？」 と問いかけたくなるものにあふれている。
たとえば 「地動説」 という厳然たる事実が常識となるまでに何百年もかかったが、一体なぜ地球が太陽の周りを回転するのかは、いまだに謎である。

　シルバーバーチというのは、霊媒のモーリス・バーバネルの口を使って、一九二〇年から六〇年間にわたって霊的教訓を語り続けてきた古代霊の仮の名で、今から三〇〇〇年前頃、つまりイエス・キリストより一〇〇〇年も前に地上で生活したということ以外、地上時代の国籍も姓名も地位も不明のままで終わった。

　せめて姓名だけでも教えてくれるよう何度かお願いしたが、そのつど、
「それを知ってどうしようというのですか。人間は名前や肩書きにこだわるからいけないのです。もしも私が歴史上有名な人物だと分かったら、私がこれまで述べてきたことに一段と箔がつくと思われるのでしょうが、それは非常にたちの悪い錯覚です。

　と答えるのが常で、そのうち出席者も聞かなくなってしまった。
　ただ一つだけはっきりしていることは、霊視能力者が描いた肖像画が北米インディアンの姿をしていても、実はそのインディアンがシルバーバーチその人ではないということである。

　インディアンは、いわば霊界の霊媒であって、実際にメッセージを送っているのは高級神霊界の存在で、直接地上の人間に働きかけるには波長が高過ぎるので、その中継役としてインディアンを使っていたのである。近代の科学的霊魂学ともいうべきスピリチュアリズムによって、死後も今と同じ意識をもって生き続けることが明らかとなった。

　第６章を 「生・老・病・死・苦──地上人生の意義」 という見出しにしたのは、これがシルバーバーチの教えの圧巻だからである。そこには在来の全ての宗教に見られる 「現世利益」（げんせりやく） 的な気休めの説教はカケラもない。

「事実なのですから、そう述べるしかありません。もしも私が地上生活をらくに生きる方法があるかに説いたら、それは私が高級神霊界からあずかった使命に背いたことになります」 とまで述べているのである。

　シルバーバーチの教説は、その意味で 「大人の人生指導原理」 といえるかも知れない。気休めのありがたい話を好まれる方には厳し過ぎるかもしれない。が、現実界を見れば、気休めやご利益信仰など吹っ飛んでしまうような事象が毎日のように起きている。今後とも、それは変わることはないであろう。

　本書によって生きる勇気を与えられることを願っている。
