地上の宗教家は、死の関門をくぐった信者は魔法のように突如として言葉では尽くせない程の喜悦に満ちた輝ける存在となって、一切の悩みと心配と不安から解放されるかに説いていますが、それは間違いです。真相とはほど遠い話です。
死んで霊界へ来た人は───初期の段階においては───地上にいた時と少しも変わりません。
肉体を棄てた───ただそれだけのことです。
個性は少しも変わりません。性格は全く一緒です。
習性も特性も性癖も個性も地上時代そのままです。
利己的な人は相変わらず利己的です。
貪欲な人は相変わらず貪欲です。
無知な人は相変わらず無知のままです。
悩みを抱いていた人は相変わらず悩んでいます。少なくとも霊的覚醒が起きるまではそうです。
こうしたことが余りに多すぎることから、霊的実在についてある程度の知識を地上に普及させるべしとの決断が下されたのです。
そこで私のような者が永年にわたって霊的生命についての真理を説く仕事にたずさわってきたわけです。
霊的というと、これまではどこか神秘的な受けとられ方をされてきましたが、そういう曖昧なものでなしに、実在としての霊の真相を説くということです。
そのためには何世紀にもわたって受け継がれてきた誤解、無知、偏見、虚偽、偽瞞、迷信───要するに人類を暗闇の中に閉じ込めてきた勢力のすべてと闘わねばなりませんでした。
私たちはそうした囚れの状態に置かれ続けている人類に霊的解放をもたらすという目的を持って一大軍団を組織しました。
お伝えする真理はいたって単純なものですが、それにはまず証拠になるものをお見せすることから始めなければなりません。
すなわち偏見を棄てて真摯な目的、真実を知ろうとする欲求を持って臨む者なら誰にでも得心がいくものであることを明らかにしなければなりません。
あなた方の愛する人々はそちら側からそのチャンスを与えてくれさえすれば、然るべき通路（霊媒）を用意してくれさえすれば、死後もなお生き続けていることを証明してくれます。
これは空想の産物ではありません。何千回も何万回も繰り返し証明されてきている事実を有りのままに述べているまでです。
もはや議論や論争のワクを超えた問題です。もっとも、見ようとしない盲目者、事実を目の前にしてもなお認めることができなくなってしまった、歪んだ心の持ち主は論外ですが。
以上が第一の目的です。〝事実ならばその証拠を見せていただこう。
われわれはもはや信じるというだけでは済まされなくなっている。
あまりに永い間気まぐれな不合理きわまる教義を信じこ込まされてきて、われわれは今そうしたものにほとほと愛想をつかしてしまった。
われわれが欲しいのはわれわれ自身で評価し、判断し、測定し、考察し、分析し、調査できるものだ〟───そうおっしゃる物質界からの挑戦にお応えして、霊的事実の証拠を提供するということです。
それはもう十分に提供されているのです。
すでに地上にもたらされております。
欲しい人は自分で手にすることができます。
それこそが私がこれまであらゆる攻撃を耐え忍び、これからもその砦となってくれる〝確定的事実〟というスピリチュアリズムの基礎なのです。
もはや、〝私は信じます。私には信仰というのがあります。
私には希望があります〟といったことでは済まされる問題ではなくなったのです。
事実なのだからどうしようもありません。
立証されたのです〟と断言できる人が数え切れないほどいる時代です。
人類史上初めて宗教が実証的事実を基礎とすることになりました。
神学上のドグマは証明しようのないものであり、当然、議論や論争がありましょう。
が、死後の存続という事実はまともな理性を持つ者なら必ず得心するだけの証拠が揃っております。
しかし、証明された時点から本当の仕事がはじまるのです。それでおしまいとなるのではありません。
まだその事実を知らない人が無数にいます。
その人たちのために証拠を見せてあげなくてはなりません。
少なくとも死後にも生命があるという基本的真理は間違いないのだという確証を植え付けてあげる必要があります。
墓の向こうにも生活があるのです。
あなた方が〝死んだ〟と思っている人たちは今もずっと生き続けているのです。
しかも、地上へ戻ってくることもできるのです。げんに戻ってきているのです。
しかし、それだけで終わってはいけません。
死後にも生活があるということはどういうことを意味するのか。
どういう具合に生き続けるのか。
その死後の生活は地上生活によってどういう影響を受けるか。二つの世界の間にはいかなる因果関係があるのか。
死の関門を通過したあと、どういう体験をしているのか。地上時代に口にしたり、行ったり心に思ったりしたことが役に立っているのか、それとも障害となっているのか。こうしたことを知らなくてはいけません。
また、死後、地上に伝えるべき教訓としていかなることを学んでいるのか。
物的所有物のすべてを残していった後に一体何が残っているのか。
死後の存続という事実は宗教に、科学に、政治に、経済に、芸術に、国際関係に、はては人種差別問題にいかなる影響を及ぼすのか、といったことも考えなくてはいけません。
そうなのです。そうした分野のすべてに影響を及ぼすことなのです。なぜなら、新しい知識は永い間人類を悩ませてきた古い問題に新たな照明を当ててくれるからです。
