巻頭言 

　あなたがもしも古き神話や伝来の信仰をもって足れりとし、あるいはすでに真理の頂上を極めたと自負されるならば、本書は用はない。が、もしも人生とは一つの冒険であること、魂は常に新しき視野、新しき道を求めてやまぬものであることをご存知ならば、ぜひお読みいただいて、世界のすべての宗教の背後に埋もれてしまった必須の霊的真理を本書の中に見出して頂きたい。

　そこにはすべての宗教の創始者によって説かれた教えと矛盾するものは何一つない。地上生活と、死後にもなお続く魂の旅路に必要不可欠の霊的知識が語られている。もしもあなたに受け入れる用意があれば、それはきっとあなたの心に明りを灯し、魂を豊かにしてくれることであろう。

その中にはあなたの理性を反発させ、あなたの知性を侮辱するものは何一つない。なぜなら、すべては愛の心と奉仕の精神から生まれたものだからである。

　本書はほぼ一世紀前に（※）霊界において開始された大々的布教活動───すべての宗教の教義の下に埋もれてしまった必須の霊的真理を掘り起こし、その本来の単純素朴な形で地上に蘇らせる活動の一環として出版されるものである。

世界各地で催されている交霊界（ﾎｰﾑｻｰｸﾙ）において、民族を異にする霊媒を通じて働きかけている支配霊たちが目的としているのは、人間に霊的実在を教え霊的叡智を授けることによってお互いがお互いのための生活を送り、そうすることによって同胞精神に満ちた新しい世界を招来する一助となるように導くことにある。

　本書に収められているのは世界的に敬愛されている古代霊からの教訓である。その名をシルバーバーチというが、これは本名ではない。いま彼が所属している世界では名前はどうでもよいのだといって明かそうとしないのである。が、いつかは明かす日が来ることを約束している。

　過去九年間ほぼ週に一回の割でこの霊のメッセンジャー（使い）の入神談話を速記してきて───彼は自分のことを上層界の神霊によって派遣されたメッセンジャーに過ぎないと言い、功績を自分のように言われるのを嫌うが───私はシルバーバーチを高貴な個性と明確な視野と表現の流暢さとを兼ね具えた高級神霊の一人として尊敬するようになった。

　冷やかな活字では彼の言葉の温かさ、サークルに出席して個人的に接した者が肌で感じ取る情愛を伝えることはできない。一度も交霊会に出席したことがなく活字によってのみシルバーバーチを知る者には、直接（ｼﾞｶ）にその声を耳にしているメンバーほどには彼の人類を思いやる心は感じ取れない。

　われわれメンバーにとってはシルバーバーチは同席しているメンバーとまったく変わらない実在の人物である。

彼が常に訴えるのは理性であり、行いの試金石は動機であり、望みとしているのは自分を役立てることのみである。慈悲の心と思いやりと理解力に溢れるシルバーバーチは決して人を諌めることはしない、しばしば非難の矛先を組織へ向けることはあっても、決して個人へは向けない。
　
援助の要請も絶対に断らない。自分が役に立つ可能性があればいかなる労苦もいとわず、いかに難しい説明も試みてくれる。

　初めて出席した招待者が礼を述べると、シルバーバーチはきまって、礼は神に述べなさいと言う。そして〝私は一介の僕に過ぎず、礼を述べていただくわけにはまいりません。

すべては神へ捧げるべきです〟と述べる。と言うのも、シルバーバーチの主張するところによれば、かつての使者によってもたらされたメッセージがその使者を崇める者たちによって影が薄くなってしまっている。

したがって我々がシルバーバーチに感謝するようになれば、それは何時かはシルバーバーチという使者を崇めてメッセージは二の次となり、ついには本来の使者を台無しにしてしまいかねないというのである。
