　その自由を満喫している霊のことを悲しんではいけません。毛虫が美しい蝶になったことを嘆いてはいけません。カゴの鳥が空に放たれたことに涙してはいけません。よろこんであげるべきです。

そして、その魂が真の自由を見出したことで、いま地上にいるあなた方も神より授かった魂の潜在能力を開発すれば、同じ自由、同じ喜びを味わうことができることを知って下さい。

　これで死の意味がお分かりになるはずです。そして、死とは飛び石の一つ、ないしは大きな自由を味わえる霊の世界への関門に過ぎないことを得心なさるはずです。

　他界してその自由を味わったのちに開発される霊力を、今ここであなた方に身を持って実感していただけないことを、私は実に残念に思います。しかし、あなた方には知識があります。それをご一緒に広めているところです。それによってきっと地上に光をもたらし、暗闇をなくすことができます。

　人間はもう、何世紀にもわたって迷わされ続けてきた古い教義は信じません。教会の権威は失墜の一途をたどっております。霊的真理の受け入れを拒んできた報いとして、霊力を失いつつあるのです」

"That body is not you. You are, by nature, an eternal spiritual being. We meet once a week in this way and spend a few moments, which strengthens our bonds with each other. However, it is useful for deepening contact.

You are just one huge atom ─── you are like an atom that expresses your ego in a limited form while having infinite possibilities. Someday, you have the power to break through all the bindings and express yourself through the true body that is right for you.


You call that happening "death", and we mourn and weep those who do. It is proof that there is still the idea that the body is that person, and that death has robbed a loved one.


However, death has no effect on life. Death can't do anything about life. Death cannot destroy life. Physical things, after all, are no match for spiritual things.


If you can see with a ghost eye, if you can hear with a ghost ear, if the soul behind the body can feel the spiritual vibration of the spirit world, then the body You will be able to see the free, triumphant, joyful, resurrected spirit that is pleased to be released from the prison.


Don't be sad about the spirits enjoying that freedom. Don't mourn that caterpillars have become beautiful butterflies. Don't weep when the bird in the cage is released into the sky. You should be happy.


And know that by finding true freedom in that soul, you, who are now on earth, can enjoy the same freedom and the same joy if you develop the potential of the soul that God has given you.


This should give you an idea of ​​the meaning of death. And you should be aware that death is just one of the stepping stones, or the gateway to the spiritual world where you can enjoy great freedom.


I am really sorry that you cannot feel the spiritual power that will be developed after you pass away and enjoy the freedom. But you have the knowledge. We are spreading it together. It will surely bring light to the earth and eliminate the darkness.

　　〇 霊言が始まるまで

一九二〇年から六〇年もの長きにわたってシルバーバーチと名のる〝霊〟の霊媒をつとめることになるモーリス・バーバネルは、その年までは霊的なものに関心もなければ、特別な霊的体験もない、ごく普通の人間だった。それどころか、むしろ宗教とか信仰とかいったものを嫌悪する傾向すらあった。

　というには、母親は敬虔なクリスチャンで教会通いも欠かすことがなかったが、父親はそういうことにはまったく無関心で、それを咎める母との間で口ゲンカが絶えなかったからである。

それが、自然、そういう性向を生んだのだろうと、自伝風の記事の中で述べている。従ってバーバネルは、生涯、バイブルと言うものを一度も繙いたことがなかったという。

　そのことが、実は、後に大きな意味をもつことになる。通常意識の時はかたことも出てこないバイブルのことばが、シルバーバーチが語り始めると、とうとうと出てくるのである。

それはつまり両者がまったく別人格であること───言いかえれば、シルバーバーチはバーバネルの潜在意識でないことの証拠となるわけである。絶対的証拠とは言えないまでも、有力な証拠であることは間違いないであろう。

　そのバーバネルが霊的なことに関わり合いを持つに至ったのは十八歳のときで、無報酬で司会役をしていた文人ばかりの社交クラブで当日の講演者がスピリチュアリズムの話題を持ち出したことがきっかけだった。講演のあとバーバネルはその講演者からロンドンの東部地区で催されているという〝交霊会〟なるものに誘われた。

　妻のシルビアと共に訪れてみると、霊媒はブロースタインという中年の女性で、トランス状態　（昏睡または無意識状態）　に入ると、その人の口を使って代るがわる、いろんな国の死者の〝霊〟がしゃべる───そう説明された。が、当時のバーバネルにはそんなことがまるで信じられず、バカバカしく思えて仕方がなかったという。

　ところが、二度目に訪れた時、バーバネルはうっか〝居眠り〟をしてしまった───自分ではそう思った。そして、目覚めると慌てて非礼を詫びた。すると他の出席者たちから　「あなたは今居眠りをなさってのではありません。インディアンがあなたの口を使ってしゃべりました」　と聞かされた。

　もちろんバーバネルにはその記憶はない。が、その後、そういうことが頻繁に起きるようになった。そしてその口を使ってしゃべるインディアンも次第に英語が上手になり、やがて、シルバーバーチ　（日本語に置きかえれば〝白樺〟）　と名のるようになった。

それが一九二〇年のことで、それから十年余りはバーバネルのアパートの応接間で不定期に数人の知人、友人が聞くだけで、その霊言を速記するとこも録音することもしなかった。

　が、当時〝フリート街の法王〟と呼ばれて英国ジャーナリスト界のご意見番的存在だったハンネン・スワッファーという演劇評論家がその会に出席してから、変化が生じた。シルバーバーチの霊言のただならぬ質の高さに感銘したスワッファーは、会場を自宅に移して、

毎週金曜日の夜に定期的に催すことにし、その会の正式名を〝ハンネン・スワッファー・ホームサークル〟とした。そしてその時から霊言を記録することになった。（その後テープ録音も併用された。）

　それがまとめられて 『シルバーバーチの教え』 Teachings of Silver Birch　のタイトルで刊行されたのが一九三八年のことで以来、今日（一九九三年）までに十六冊が刊行されている。

　何しろ一九八一年にバーバネルが他界するまでの六十年間、ほぼ週一回 （一回が約一時間半） の割で語り続けたのであるから、記録を残さなかった最初の十年分を差し引いても、速記と録音による霊言の量は、厖大なものであろうと察せられる。

それを文章に起こしてまとめるのは大変な作業であるが、英米はもとより、ヨーロッパやアフリカに至るまでのシルバーバーチフアンの要望は絶えることなく、これからの刊行しされ続けることであろう。


　　〇　シルバーバーチのアイデンティティ

　では、シルバーバーチの霊言の魅力と特色はどこにあるのか───これは、シルバーバーチの〝正体〟はいったい何なのかを説明することによって、おのずと明らかになるであろう。

　本人の語るところによれば、今からほぼ三千年前、すなわちイエスの時代より更に一千年前も前に、地上生活を送ったことがあるという。それがどこの民族の、どの国家の、どういう地位の人物としてであったかは、六十年間、ついに明かされることなく、終わっている。

サークルのレギラーメンバーをはじめ、招待客によって、何回も、何十回も、もしかしたら何百回も問い質されたはずなのであるが、シルバーバーチはそのつど

　「それを明かす事が、一体、私の教えにどれだけプラスになるというのでしょうか。大切なのは、語っている私が何者であるかではなくて、私が語っている教えが何であるかです」

　といった主旨のことを繰り返すだけで、人間がとかく地位や肩書（ラベル）や名声にこだわることの間違いを指摘するのが常だった。

　彼はインディアンでなかったとおっしゃる方がいるであろうが、実は巻頭に掲げたマルセルポンサンによる肖像画に描かれているインディアンは通信衛星のようなもので、いうなれば〝霊界の霊媒〟なのである。地上の霊媒であるバーバネルは各家庭の受信アンテナのようなものと思えばよい。

　当初はそのシルバーバーチもインディアンであることに徹し、祈りの最後も必ず　「神の僕インディアンの祈りを捧げます」　という言葉で締めくくっていたが、サークルのメンバーの理解が深まった段階で　「実は・・・・・・」 と言って、本当は自分はインディアンではなく、地球を取り巻く霊界の中でも指導的地位にある霊団に所属していることを打ち明けた。

　その界層にまで進化していくと、波動の原理から、地上界と直接のコンタクトが取れなくなり、それで中継役を必要とすることになる。その役がインディアンなのだという。もしそれが事実だとすると、シルバーバーチと名のるその霊はよほどの高級霊であると推察してよいであろう。

そして、ほぼ三千年前の地上時代の地位も名声も、余ほど高いものであったはずである。なぜなら、もしも無名で平凡な地位の人間だったならば、その名前と地位を明かしてもよかったはずだからである。

　それを明かさなかったということは、人間の好奇心におもねることによって、純粋な霊的真理に世俗的な雑念がこびりつくことを案じたからではなかろうか。


〇 霊言の種類

　ところで、霊言現象は霊が人間の発声器官を使って語る現象であるが、これには、大別して二つの種類がある。一つは電話式とでもいうべきもので、高級霊でも低級霊でも、善霊でも悪霊でも、乗り移ってしゃべることができるタイプで、したがって霊媒と異なる国籍の霊が乗り移れば、通常意識での霊媒には全くしゃべれない言語を流暢にしゃべることになる。

　もう一つは〝専属〟タイプで、支配霊（ｺﾝﾄﾛｰﾙ）と呼ばれる特定の霊しかしゃべらない───しゃべらせないのである。言ってみれば、名匠と言われる人が楽器や道具を絶対に他人に使わせないのと同じで、自分だけのものとして、そのクセと特徴を知り尽くしている。

シルバーバーチとバーバネルの関係はこのタイプに属し、バーバネルがシルバーバーチ以外の霊団に支配されることもなかったし、シルバーバーチがバーバネル以外の霊媒を通してしゃべったこともなかった。

（例外として一度だけあった。シルバーバーチがバーバネルのコントロールとして交霊会を始めたのとほぼ同じ頃から、レッド・クラウドと名のるインディアンがエステルロバーツという女性霊媒のコントロールとして毎週のように交霊会に出現していた。

バーバネル夫妻はその常連として欠かさず出席していたが、ある日、そのロバーツ女史の口を借りてシルバーバーチがバーバネル夫妻に語りかけた。バーバネルは、自分はいつもこんな調子で語っているのかと思って、いわく言い難い気分になったという。 シルビアバーバネル著　「ペットは死後も生きている」　ハート出版）参照

　シルバーバーチ自身が打ち明けたところによると、〝地球を霊的に浄化する〟ための計画の一環として、地球へ戻って霊的真理を語って欲しいという要請を受けた時は、バーバネルはまだ地上に誕生してもいなかったという。

そこで、〝霊界の記録簿〟の中にある、これから誕生する人物の中から最も適切と思える人物を物色して、それが地上に誕生するチャンスを窺い、いよいよ母体に宿った瞬間から、霊言霊媒として育てるための準備に取りかかったという。と同時に、英語の勉強も始めたという。

　こうしたことは多分、霊界の霊媒であるインディアンの役目だったはずでシルバーバーチ本人はそのインディアンとの打ち合わせの方に重点を置いて準備をしていたことであろう。

そして一九二〇年のある日、ブロースタインの交霊会に出席中にバーバネルをトランス状態に誘って語ったのが、地上との最初のコンタクトとなるのであるが、この時点でもまだインディアンとバーバネルとの関係が主体であって、シルバーバーチ本人はその様子を観察していた程度ではなかったろうかと察せられる。

　一九二〇年と言えば第一次大戦が終結して間もない頃で、一応戦火は消えていた。が、ハンネン・スワッファー・ホームサークルが発足した頃は再び世界情勢は険悪となり始めた時期で、それから間もなく第二次大戦の口火が切られている。

そして一九四五年日本の降伏をもって終戦を迎えるのであるが、そうした険悪な情勢の中にあっても、バーバネルは交霊会を中止しなかった。　とは言え、霊団側の苦心は並大抵のものではなかったようである。その時の苦労をシルバーバーチはこう語っている。

　「私たちは物的存在ではありません。物的世界との接触を求めているところの霊的存在です。霊の世界と物の世界との間に大きな懸隔（ｷﾞｬｯﾌﾟ）があり、それを何らかの媒介によって橋渡しする必要があります。

私が厄介な問題に遭遇するのはいつもその橋渡しの作業においてです。それを容易にするのも難しくするのも、人間側の精神的状態です。

　雰囲気が悪いと、私と霊媒とのつながりが弱くなり、私と霊界との連絡も困難となります。わずか二、三本の連絡網によってどうにか交信を保つということもあります。そのうち霊媒が反応を見せなくなります。そうなると私は手の施しようがなくなり、すべてを断念して引き上げざるを得なくなります。

　私は当初から、こうした問題が生じるとこは覚悟しておりました。一時は、果たして、このまま地上との接触を維持することが賢明か否かを、霊団の者たちと議論したこともありました。

しかし私は、たとえわずかとはいえ、私が携えてきた知識を伝えることにより、力と希望と勇気を必要としている人々にとって、私の素朴な霊訓が生きる拠り所となるはずだと決断しました。

　今、私は、もしも私たちがお届けした霊的真理が無かったら今なお苦難と絶望の中で喘いでいるかもしれない人々の慰めと力になってあげることができたことを、うれしく思っております」


〇 地球浄化の大計画───スピリチュアリズム

 

　右の言葉の中に〝霊団の者たちと･･････〟という表現があるが、シルバーバーチがこの仕事のために組織した霊団のメンバーが何名で、どういう顔ぶれがいたかは、断片的には分かっていても、その全ては分かっていない。

リンカーンもいたらしいが、その他にシルバーバーチが挙げた何人かの名前は日本人には全く馴染みのない人ばかりである。それが本当であろう。前世とか守護霊とかの名前が歴史上の著名人ばかりであるのは、土台おかしな話である。

　尚シルバーバーチは〝私は〟という言い方と〝私たちは〟という言い方の二通りを用いている。これは、もちろん自分自身の場合と霊団を代表している場合との違いであるが、もう一つの観方としては、シルバーバーチが所属する高級霊界に立ち戻って述べている場合があることに注意する必要がある。

　どうやら霊界の上層部では、支配霊の仕事をしている高級霊ばかりの集会が年に何回か開かれて、反省と計画の修正が行われ、その界層の更に高い界層の霊から助言を受けていたらしいのである。その中の一柱で、総指揮者的な立場にあった　（今もあると推察される）　のが地上でイエスと呼ばれた人物であると、シルバーバーチは言う。

もちろん地上時代よりははるかに高い霊格を備えていることであろう。というよりは、本当は、もともと神とも仰ぐべきほどの霊格、すなわち神格を具えた存在だったのが、ある計画にそって物質界へ降誕したと見るのが妥当であろう。

その〝ある計画〟というのがほかでもない、地球を霊的に浄化するための一連の活動、すなわちスピリチュアリズムだった。

　むろんその計画は今なお進行中であり、バーバネル亡きあとも、シルバーバーチ霊団そのものは、たぶんバーバネル自身も加わって、地球人類のために活動していることであろう。このたび装いも新たに本書が刊行されることになったことにも、シルバーバーチ霊団働きかけがあるものと、私は信じている。
