シルバーバーチとは何者か 訳者 近藤千雄
本書を手にして「まえがき」と「編者まえがき」に目を通した時、シルバーバーチの霊言集がほとんど廃刊となった今でも、英国において「霊的真理普及財団」や「勉強会」という形で脈々と生き続けていることを知ってうれしかった。
人間は形而上的にも形而下的にも 「なぜ？」 と問いかけたくなるものにあふれている。
たとえば 「地動説」 という厳然たる事実が常識となるまでに何百年もかかったが、一体なぜ地球が太陽の周りを回転するのかは、いまだに謎である。
まっすぐに進もうとする地球を太陽が引っ張るから、というのは単なる原理的解説であって、では、なぜ地球はまっすぐに進もうとするのかは、天文学でもいまだに謎である。
こうした 「なぜ？」 と問いかけたくなることは、人生にはいくらでもある。本書は、そのいくつかに納得のいく回答を与えてくれる。かけがえのない英知の泉であるが、シルバーバーチと名のる霊は一体いかなる存在なのであろうか。本書によってはじめてシルバーバーチを知ったという方のために、おおよそのところを紹介しておきたい。
シルバーバーチというのは、霊媒のモーリス・バーバネルの口を使って、一九二〇年から六〇年間にわたって霊的教訓を語り続けてきた古代霊の仮の名で、今から三〇〇〇年前頃、つまりイエス・キリストより一〇〇〇年も前に地上で生活したということ以外、地上時代の国籍も姓名も地位も不明のままで終わった。
せめて姓名だけでも教えてくれるよう何度かお願いしたが、そのつど、
「それを知ってどうしようというのですか。人間は名前や肩書きにこだわるからいけないのです。もしも私が歴史上有名な人物だと分かったら、私がこれまで述べてきたことに一段と箔がつくと思われるのでしょうが、それは非常にたちの悪い錯覚です。
前世で私が王様であろうと召使いであろうと、大富豪であろうと奴隷であろうと、そんなことはどうでもでもよろしい。私の述べていることに、なるほどと納得がいったら真理として信じてください。そんなばかなと思われたら、どうぞ拒否してください。それでいいのです」
と答えるのが常で、そのうち出席者も聞かなくなってしまった。
ただ一つだけはっきりしていることは、霊視能力者が描いた肖像画が北米インディアンの姿をしていても、実はそのインディアンがシルバーバーチその人ではないということである。
インディアンは、いわば霊界の霊媒であって、実際にメッセージを送っているのは高級神霊界の存在で、直接地上の人間に働きかけるには波長が高過ぎるので、その中継役としてインディアンを使っていたのである。近代の科学的霊魂学ともいうべきスピリチュアリズムによって、死後も今と同じ意識をもって生き続けることが明らかとなった。
これを 「個性の死後存続」 と呼び、これは 「地動説」 と同じく科学的事実として、好むと好まざるとにかかわらず、万人が認めざるを得ないものである。
その詳しい解説は第4章にゆずることにして、シルバーバーチが繰り返し説いている特徴的な教訓の一つは、仏教で「生・老・病・死」 を不幸としてとらえているのとは対照的に、そうしたものを体験するところに地上生活の意義があり、いわば魂の肥やしとして前向きにとらえることが、死後の向上につながると説いていることである。
第６章を 「生・老・病・死・苦──地上人生の意義」 という見出しにしたのは、これがシルバーバーチの教えの圧巻だからである。そこには在来の全ての宗教に見られる 「現世利益」（げんせりやく） 的な気休めの説教はカケラもない。
「事実なのですから、そう述べるしかありません。もしも私が地上生活をらくに生きる方法があるかに説いたら、それは私が高級神霊界からあずかった使命に背いたことになります」 とまで述べているのである。
シルバーバーチの教説は、その意味で 「大人の人生指導原理」 といえるかも知れない。気休めのありがたい話を好まれる方には厳し過ぎるかもしれない。が、現実界を見れば、気休めやご利益信仰など吹っ飛んでしまうような事象が毎日のように起きている。今後とも、それは変わることはないであろう。
本書によって生きる勇気を与えられることを願っている。
