　近代の歴史を振り返ってみると、二十世紀は近代的戦争の世紀だったと言っても過言ではないであろう。第一次および第二次世界大戦をはじめ、日清・日露・ベトナム戦争、最近では超近代兵器による中東の湾岸戦争が記憶に新しい。

　シルバーバーチの霊媒モーリス・バーバネルは一九〇二年の生まれで、第一次・第二次の世界大戦の中を生き抜いて、一九八一年に七十九歳で他界している。まさに戦乱の二十世紀を生き抜いてきたわけであるが、その大半の六十年間をシルバーバーチの霊媒として仕えたのみならず、〝ツーワールズ〟（※）と〝サイキック・ニューズ〟の二紙の主筆として健筆を揮った。

バーバネルがよく自慢したことの一つは、第二次世界大戦の最中も一週としてその二紙を休刊しなかったことであるが、それ以上に私が頭が下がる思いがするのは、シルバーバーチの交霊会（正式の名をハンネン・スワッファー・ホームサークルといった）　も週一回のペースを崩さなかったことである。

　※───当初は週刊紙として発刊し、のちに月刊誌になり、さらに数年前にヘッドクォーター出版社に買い取られた。が、最近その編集長にバーバネルの子分のトニー・オーツセンがおさまったのも奇縁である。

　これは、バーバネルの執念に頭が下がるという意味ばかりではない。支配霊のシルバーバーチが戦乱による波動の乱れで通信不能の寸前まで至りながら、ついに諦めなかったこともその背景にある。われわれ人間には想像できないことであるが、霊的通信網が一本また一本と切断され、霊団の者が　「もうダメです、引き上げましょう」　と進言しても、　「こういう時こそわれわれの援助が必要なのだから」　と、シルバーバーチは叱咤激励したと言う。



　　 大きかったスワッファーの存在

　さて、そのシルバーバーチとバーバネルのコンビによる仕事が一九二〇年のある日突如として始まったことは、大方のシルバーバーチファンはすでにご存知と思う。

最初のころはバーバネル自身もそれがどういうメカニズムになっていて何の目的で行なわれるかも分からず、嫌々ながら入神させられるまま行ない、聞く者も、奥さんのシルビアをはじめ三、四人の知人だけだった。もちろん記録など残してはいない。そこへ決定的な意味をもつハンネン・スワッファーの登場となる。

　スワッファーは当時すでに英国ジャーナリズム界に君臨する大物で、しかもバリアンティンと言う直接談話霊媒による交霊会（〝デニス・ブラッドレー・ホームサークル〟といった）に出席した時に大先輩のノースクリッフ卿の出現によって決定的な死後存続の証拠を手にし、　『ノースクリッフの帰還』　という著書でそれを公表して大センセーションを巻き起こしていた（一九二四年）。

　そのスワッファーがうわさを聞いてバーバネルの交霊会に出席し、シルバーバーチの霊言の質の高さに感嘆した。そして、それを是非とも〝サイキック・ニューズ〟か〝ツ―ワールズ〟に掲載するよう進言した。が、バーバネルは自分がその二紙の主筆であり社長でもあることを理由に、それを断った。

　が、出席するたびにシルバーバーチという霊の霊格の高さを感じ取る一方のスワッファーは、バーバネルにしつこく公表を迫った。二人は親しい友人でもあったので時には口論となることもあったらしいが、ついに　（推定で一九三五年頃から）　霊媒がバーバネルであることを伏せるという条件のもとに連載がはじまり、それを、まとめた最初の霊言集が『シルバーバーチの教え』　のタイトルで一九三八年に出版された。

　が、その時点でも、序文を書いたスワッファーも〝霊媒がひやかし半分のつもりで交霊会に初めて出席した時は十八歳の無神論者だった〟と述べるにとどめ、バーバネルの名は公表されなかった。が、それがいつまでも隠し通せるわけはない。

　「いったい霊媒は誰なのか」　という問い合わせの多さに圧倒されて、ついに一九五九年になって〝シルバーバーチの霊媒は誰か───実はこの私である〟という見出しでバーバネル自身が公表したのだった。

By the way, most Silver Birch fans already know that the work by the combination of Silver Birch and Barbanel suddenly started one day in 1920.

At the beginning, Barbanel himself did not know what kind of mechanism it was and what purpose it was done, and he was reluctantly made to enter the god, and only three or four acquaintances including his wife Sylvia heard it. rice field. Swaffer was already a big figure in the British journalism world at that time, and was decisive due to the appearance of his senior Sir Northcliffe when he attended a séance (such as "Dennis Bradley Home Circle") by a direct discourse medium called Variantin. Having obtained evidence of his survival after death, he published it in his book "The Return of the North Cliff", which caused a great sensation (1924).

However, even at that time, Swaffer, who wrote the preface, only stated that he was an eighteen-year-old atheist when he first attended the séance with the intention that the medium was half-hearted, and the name of Barbanel was not announced. .. However, it cannot be hidden forever.

Overwhelmed by the number of inquiries about "Who is the medium?", In 1959, Barbanel himself announced under the heading "Who is the medium of Silver Birch?" I did.
