未来における生活を明確かつ詳細に認識することは、未来に対する揺るがぬ確信を形成することになり、その、確信が、地上において人間を取り巻く生活に対する視点を完全に変えてしまうため、人類の道徳観念に多大な影響を及ぼします。 

その思考において自分を無限の霊的な生活に置くことが出来る者にとっては、肉体を持つ生活は単なる一過性のもの、不幸な国での一時的な滞在となります。

その生活における一連の盛衰や混乱は一時のものであり、その後により幸せな生活が訪れることが判っているので、じっと耐え忍んでいればいいような出来事に過ぎないのです。 

死はもはや虚無に対して開かれた恐れをもたらす扉ではなく、解放へと通じる扉となり、流刑者たちはそこを通って、平和と至福の家に入っていくことができるようになるのです。

この世での滞在が永遠のものではなくて一時的なものだということを知っているので、人生の心配事にも大した関心を抱くことなく霊的な平静をもたらし、悲哀の多くを取り除くことになります。

未来における生活を疑うという単純なことから、人間はそのあらゆる考えを地上における生活に差し向けます。 

地上における富以上に貴重な富を見つけることがでず、自分のオモチャ以外何も目に入らぬ子供のようになります。そして唯一本物として映る地上の富を獲得するために、どんなことでも行います。

そうした富のほんの少しでも失うものなら、過失、失望、満たされぬ野心、不正の犠牲となること、傷つけられた自尊心や虚栄心と言った数々の苦痛が、人生においていつまでも続く苦悩と化すのです。

このように人間は、いつも真の拷問を自らに科していることになります。自分が実際にあると考える物質世界に視点を置くと、自分の周りにあるものがその視野全てを占めることになります。 

そうした目には、自分のもとに訪れる悪や、他の者を動かす善などが、大きな重要性を持つように映ってしまいます。都会の中にいる者には全てが大きく見えます。

高い地位に辿り着いた者にとって、その記念碑は、とても大きく見えるものです。しかし、山に登って見下ろすと、人も物も小さく見えるようになります。未来における生活に重点を置いて地上の生活を送る人にはこのような視点があります。

人類は、天にある星と同じように、無限に広がる空間の中では小さすぎて見分けがつかなくなります。 

すると蟻塚の上にいる蟻のように、大きなものも小さなものも混同してしまって居ることに気づきます。無産者も主権者も同じ背丈であることが判ります。

悲しいことに、これらのはかない生き物たちは、彼らを殆ど向上させることのない、とても短い時間しか持続しない、その居場所を勝ち取るために、大変な苦労に身を投じているのです。

このことから、私たちが地上の財産に与える重要性が、常に未来における生活への確信から来る重要性とは相反しているのだと考えるようになるのです。

神は地上の楽しみを非難することはありません。しかし魂に損害を与えるまでこの楽しみに溺れることを非難します。 

イエスの言った次の言葉を自分自身に応用させることができる者は、こうした楽しみの濫用を予防することができます。「私の国はこの世のものではありません」。

未来における生活を自分の身に起こることとして考えることのできる者は、少額を失うことに動揺せぬ金持ちの様な人です。 

地上の生活ばかりに考えを集中させる者は、持つもの全てを失い途方に暮れてしまう貧乏な人のようです。
