偶然・運命の気まぐれ・奇跡・偶発事故というものは存在しません
病気というのは、その大半は主として精神と肉体と魂との間の連絡が正しく行われていないことに起因しています。正しく行われていれば、つまり完全な一体関係が保たれていれば、健康と安定性と落着きと機敏性をそなえています。もっとも、そういう人物は地上では滅多にお目にかかれませんが……
さて、あなたのもとを訪れる患者は、その人なりの霊的成長段階にあります。人生という梯子（はしご）の一つの段の上に立っているわけです。それがどの段であるかが、その人に注がれる治癒力の分量を決します。それを決する要素の一つが、わたしのいうカルマ的負債です。
その負債が大きすぎて、あなたにも手の施しようのない人がいます。肉体を犠牲にする、つまり死ぬこと以外に返済の方法がない人もいます。もう一度チャンスが与えられる人もいます。そんな人があなたとの縁で完治するということになる場合もあります。精神的要素のために治らない人もいます。そんな場合は、一時的には快方へ向かっても、また別の症状となってぶり返すでしょう」
「ということは、カルマ的負債の方がその人に注がれる治癒力よりも大きいのだと思います」
「おっしゃる通りです。わたしはぜひその点を強調したいのです。それが当人に賦課された税金であり、みずから綴っている物語（ストーリー）であり、その筋書きは、他の何ものによっても書き変えることはできないということです。
初めにわたしは、すべては法則の枠組みの中に存在すると申し上げました。何事もそれを前提として働きます。人間のいう奇跡は生じません。自然法則の停止も、変更も廃止もありません。すべてが原因と結果から成り立っております。そこに、自由への制約の要素があるわけです。もしも因果関係が何らかの理由でキャンセルできるとしたら、神の公正が根本から崩れます。治療家にできることは、魂を解放し、精神に自由を与えてあげることです。その結果が自然に身体に現れます」
「それがカルマ的負債を返済する一助となるのでしょうか」
「そういうことです。わたしが、心霊治療にとっては、その患者の魂の琴線にふれ、自我に目覚めさせ、生きる目的を自覚させることが一ばん重要な役目です、と申し上げる理由はそこにあります」
「わたしたち治療家が例外なく体験することですが、心の奥底からの喜び、高揚、崇高な情感や理念が湧き出るのを感じることがあります。あなたがおっしゃるのは、その時のことだと思います」

「あなたも、わたしも、そしてこれにたずさわる人のすべてが、それぞれに役割分担を担（にな）っているスピリチュアリズムというものの最大の目的は、人類の魂を呼び覚まして、一人でも多くの人間に本当の自分に気づかせること、自分とは一体なにか、誰なのかを知ることによって、ふだんの日常生活の中において霊の本性と属性を発揮することができるように導いてあげることです。
それによって地上生活のすべてが姿を一変し、利己主義という名の雑草の生い繁る荒野から、理想の花咲くパラダイスへと変わることでしょう。われわれは今それを目的として努力しているのであり、まずまずの成功を収めつつあります。光明を見出す人、真の自我に目覚める人、物的な居眠りの生活から目覚める人――こうした人は人間本来の道を見出し、確信と知識とをたずさえて、本当の意味での巡礼の旅に出る魂であると言えましょう」
この言葉に感動したエドワーズ氏が「これだけお教えいただけば十分です。治るということ自体は重要ではないということですね」と述べると、シルバーバーチが――
「わたしたち霊界の者が人間の苦しみに無関心であると言う意味ではありません。病をかかえた人々の悲劇や苦痛や侘（わび）しさに無頓着でいるわけではありません。が、そうした問題の究極の原因に手をつければ、精神と身体と霊との間の不調和に終止符をうつことができ、そうなれば、地上生活が必要としている光輝がふんだんに注がれるのです。神の子が享受すべく意図されている本来のもの――気高さ、崇高さ、威厳、豊かさ、光輝、美しさを見出すことでしょう。
そうした生活の末に死を迎えれば、来世にそなえるための地上生活の大役を果たしてくれた肉体を、何の苦痛もなく脱ぎ捨てて、気持よく霊界の門をくぐり抜けることができます」
