対立関係が生じるのは大源より発した叡智が自由意志を持つ無数の霊の存在する界層を通過する過程において弱められ、薄められ、屈折した界層においてのみである。

　解説　　霊的啓示の進歩 

　本書は原著者の「まえがき」にもある通り一九一三年から始まった本格的な霊界通信を四つの時期に分けてまとめた四部作の内の第一部である。

　「推薦の言葉」を寄せたノースクリッフ卿が社主を務める「ウイークリー・ディスパッチ」紙上に連載され、終了と同時に四冊の単行本となって発行されたのであるが、これとは別に、オーエン氏の死後、残された霊界通信の中から断片的に編集されたものが二編あり、それが一冊にまとめ第五巻として発行されている。

誰が編纂したのか、その氏名は記されていない。それは己むを得ないとしても、内容的に前四巻のような一貫した流れが無く、断片的な寄せ集めの感が拭えないので、今回のシリーズには入れないことにした。

　通信全体の内容を辿ってみると、第一巻の本書はオーエン氏の実の母親からの通信が大半を占め、その母親らしさと女性らしさとが内容と文体によく表れていて、言ってみれば情緒的な感じが強い。

がその合間をぬってアストリエルと名告る男性の霊からの通信が綴られ、それが第六章にまとめられている。地上で学校長をしていたというだけあって内容が極めて学問的で高度なものとなっている。

がそれも第二巻以降の深遠な内容の通信を送るための（オーエン氏の）肩ならし程度のものであったらしい。

　第二巻を担当したザブディエルと名告る霊はオーエン氏の守護霊であると同時に、本通信のために結成された霊団の最高指導霊でもある。が地上時代の身元については通信の中に何の手掛かりも出て来ない。

高級霊になると滅多に身元を明かさないものであるが、それは一つには、こうした地上人類の啓発のための霊団の最高指揮者を命ぜられるほどの霊になると、歴史的に言っても古代に属する場合が多く、例え歴史にその名を留めていても、伝説や神話がまとわりついていて信用できない、ということが考えられる。

さらには、それほどの霊になると地上の人間による〝評判〟などどうでもよいことであろう。このザブディエル霊の通信の内容はいかにも高級霊らしい厳粛な教訓となっている。

　これが第三巻そして第四巻となると、アーネルと名告る（ザブディエルと同じ界の）霊が荘厳な霊界の秘密を披露する。

とくにイエス・キリストの神性に関する教説は他のいかなる霊界通信にも見られなかった深遠なもので、キリストを説いてしかもキリストを超越した、人類にとって普遍的な意義を持つ内容となっている。まさに本通信の圧巻である。


　さて近代の霊界通信と言えば真っ先に挙げられるのがステイトン･モーゼスの自動書記通信『霊訓』であり、最近ではモーリス・バーバネルの霊界通信『シルバー・バーチの霊訓』である。そして時期的にその中間に位置するのがこの『ベールの彼方の生活』である。

　内容的に見ると『霊訓』はキリスト教的神学の誤謬を指摘し、それに代わって霊的真理を説くという形で徹頭徹尾、文字通り〝霊的教訓〟に終始し、宇宙の霊的組織や魂の宿命、例えば再生問題などについては概略を述べる程度で、余り深入りしないようにという配慮さえ窺われる。それは本来の使命から逸脱しないようにという配慮でもあろう。


　これが『ベールの彼方の生活』になると宇宙の霊的仕組みやキリストの本質について極めて明快に説き明かし、それが従来の通念を破るものでありながら、それでいて理性を納得させ且つ魂に喜悦を覚えさせるものを持っている。もっともそれは、正しい霊的知識を持つ者にかぎられることではあるが。

　そしてシルバーバーチに至ると人間世界で最も関心をもたれながら最も異論の多い〝再生〟の問題について正面から肯定的に説き、これこそ神の愛と公正を成就するための不可欠の摂理であると主張する。ほぼ五十年続いた霊言に矛盾撞着は一つも見られない。

同時にシルバーバーチが〝苦難の哲学〟とでも言えるほど苦しみと悲しみの意義を説いているのも大きな特徴で、「もし私の説く真理を聞くことによってラクな人生を送れるようになったとしたら、それは私が引き受けた宿命に背いたことになります。

私どもは人生の悩みや苦しみを避けて通る方法をお教えしているのではありません。それに敢然と立ち向かい、それを克服し、そして一層力強い人間と成って下さることが私どもの真の目的なのです」と語るのである。

　こう観て来ると、各通信にそれぞれの特徴が見られ、焦点が絞られていることが判る。そして全体を通覧した時、そこに霊的知識の進歩の後が窺われるのである。それをいみじくも指摘した通信が『霊訓』の冒頭に出ている。その一部を紹介する。


　『啓示は神より授けられる。神の真理であるという意味において、ある時代の啓示が別の時代の啓示と矛盾することは有り得ぬ。但しその真理は常にその時代の必要性と受け入れ能力に応じたものが授けられる。

一見矛盾するかに見えるのは真理そのものにはあらずして、人間の心にその原因がある。人間は単純素朴では満足し得ず、何やら複雑なるものを混入しては折角の品質を落とし、勝手な推論と思惑とで上塗りをする。

時の経過とともに、何時しか頭初の神の啓示とは似ても似つかぬものとなって行く。矛盾すると同時に不純であり、この世的なものとなってしまう。やがて新しき啓示が与えられる。

がその時はもはやそれをそのまま当てはめられる環境ではなくなっている。古き啓示の上に築き上げられた迷信の数々をまず取り壊さねばならぬ。新しきものを加える前に異物を取り除かねばならぬ。啓示そのものには矛盾は無い。

が矛盾せるが如く思わしめる古き夾雑物がある。まずそれを取り除き、その下に埋もれる真実の姿を見せねばならぬ。

人間は己れに宿る理性の光にて物事を判断せねばならぬ。理性こそ最後の判断基準であり、理性の発達せる人間は無知なる者や偏見に固められたる人間が拒絶するものを喜んで受け入れる。

神は決して真理の押し売りはせぬ。この度のわれらによる啓示も、地ならしとして、限られた人間への特殊なる啓示と思うがよい。これまでも常にそうであった。モーゼは自国民の全てから受け入れられたであろうか。イエスはどうか。パウロはどうか。歴史上の改革者をみるがよい。

自国民に受け入れられた者が一人でもいたであろうか。神は常に変わらぬ。神は啓示はするが決して押し付けはせぬ。用意の出来ていた者のみがそれを受け入れる。無知なる者、備えなき者は拒絶する。それで良いのである。』


　今改めて本霊界通信を通覧すると、第一巻より第四巻へ段階的に〝進歩〟して行っていることが判る。それを受け入れるか否か、それは右の『霊訓』のとおり〝己れに宿る理性の光〟によって判断して頂く他はない。願わくば読者の理性が偏見によって曇らされないことを祈りたい。


　訳者としてはただひたすら、本通信に盛られた真理を損ねないようにと務めるのみであるが、次元の異なる世界の真相を如何に適切な日本語で表現していくべきか、前途を思うと重大なる責任を感じて身の引き締まる思いがする。が〝賽（さい）は投げられた〟のである。あとは霊界からの支援を仰ぐほかはない。

　シルバーバーチの言葉を借りれば〝受け入れる用意の出来た人々〟が一人でも多くこの霊界通信と巡り合い、その人なりの教訓を摂取して下さることを祈る次第である。

　今夜も、もしよろしければ、死後の世界に関する昨夜の通信の続きをお届けしようと思います。

　引き続き太陽に関してですが、昨日の内容を吟味してみると、まだまだ死後の世界の複雑さの全てを述べ尽くしておりません。

と言うのも、太陽と各惑星を取り巻く界層が互いに重なり合っているだけでなく、それぞれの天体の動きによる位置の移動───ある時は接近しある時は遠ざかるという変化に応じて霊界の相互関係も変化している。

それ故、地球へ押し寄せる影響力は一秒たりとも同じではないと言っても過言ではありません。事実その通りなのです。

　また同じ地球上でもその影響の受け方、つまり強さは一様ではなく場所によって異なります。それに加えて、太陽系外の恒星からの放射性物質の流入も計算に入れなければならない。

こうした条件を全て考慮しなければならないのです。何しろそこでは霊的存在による活発な造化活動が営まれており、瞬時たりとも休むことがないことを銘記して下さい。

　以上が各種の惑星系を支配している霊的事情のあらましです。地上の天文学者の肉眼や天体望遠鏡に映じるのはその外面に過ぎません。ところが実は以上述べたことも宇宙全体を規模として考えた時は大海の一滴に過ぎない。船の舳先（へさき）に立っている人間が海のしぶきを浴びている光景を思い浮かべていただきたい。

細かいしぶきが霧状となって散り、太陽の光を受けてキラキラと輝きます。その様子を見て〝無数のしぶき〟と表現するとしたら、ではそのしぶきが戻って行く海そのものはどう表現すべきか。

キラキラ輝く満天の星も宇宙全体からすればその海のしぶき程度に過ぎません。それも目に見える表面の話です。しぶきを上げる海面の下には深い深い海底の世界が広がっている如く、宇宙も人間の目に映じる物的世界の奥に深い深い霊の世界が広がっているのです。

　もう少し話を進めてみましょう。そもそも〝宇宙〟という用語自体が、所詮表現できるはずのないものを表現するために便宜的に用いられているものです。

従って明確な意味は持ち合わせません。地上のある詩人が宇宙を一篇の詩で表現しようとして、中途で絶望して筆を折ったという話がありますが、それでよかったのです。もしも徹底的にやろうなどと意気込んでいたら、その詩は永遠に書き続けなければならなかったことでしょう。

　一体宇宙とは何か。どこに境界があるのか。無限なのか。もし無限だとすると中心が無いことになる。すると神の玉座はいずこにあるのか。神は全創造物の根源に位置していると言われるのだが。

いや、その前に一体創造物とは何を指すのか。目に見える宇宙のことなのか。それとも目に見えない世界も含むのか。

　実際問題として、こうした所詮理解できないことをいくら詮索してみたところで何の役にも立ちません。もっとも、判らないながらもこうした問題を時おり探ってみるのも、人間の限界を知る上であながち無益とも言えますまい。そう観念した上で吾々は、理解できる範囲のことを述べてみたいと思います。

　これまで述べて来た霊的界層にはそれぞれの程度の応じた霊魂が存在し、真理を体得するにつれて一界また一界と、低い界から高い界へ向けて進化して行く。そして、先に述べたように、そうやって向上して行くうちにいつかは、少なくとも二つ以上の惑星の霊界が重なり合った段階に到達する。

さらに向上すると今度は二つ以上の恒星の霊界が重なり合うほどの直径を持つ界層に至る。つまり太陽系の惑星はおろか、二つ以上の太陽系まで包含してしまうほどの広大な世界に至る。

そこにもその次元に相応しい崇高さと神聖さと霊力を具えた霊魂が存在し、その範囲に包含された全ての世界へ向けて、霊的・物的の区別なく、影響力を行使している。ご承知のとおり吾々はようやく惑星より恒星へ、そして恒星よりその恒星の仲間へと進化して来たところです。

その先にはまだまだ荘厳にして驚異的な世界が控えておりますが、この第十界の住民たる吾々にはその真相はほとんど判らないし、確実なことは何一つ判らないという有様です。

　が、これで吾々が昨夜の通信の中で〝神〟のことを、何とお呼びすべきか判らぬ未知にして不可知の存在のように申し上げた、その真意がおぼろげながらも理解していただけるのではないかと思います。

ですから、貴殿が創造主を賛美する時、正直言ってその創造主の聖秩（せいちつ）について何ら明確な観念はお有ちでない。〝万物の創造主のことである〟と簡単におっしゃるかも知れませんが、では〝万物〟とは一体何かということになります。

　さて少なくとも吾々の界層から観る限り次のことは確実に言えます。すなわち〝創造主〟という用語をもって貴殿が何を意味しようと、確固たる信念を持って創造主に祈願することは間違っていない。

その祈りの念はまず最低界に届き、祈りの動機と威力次第でそこでストップするものとそこを通過して次の界に至るものがある。中にはさらに上昇して高級神霊界へと至るものもある。

吾々の界のはるか上方には想像を超えた光と美のキリスト界が存在する。そこまで到達した祈りはキリストを通して宇宙神へと届けられる。地上へ誕生して人類に父なる神を説いたあの主イエス・キリストである。（この問題に関しては第二巻以降で詳しく説かれる。───訳者）

　ところで、以上述べたことは全て真実ではあるが、その真実も、語りかける吾々の側とそれを受ける貴殿の側の双方の能力の限界によって、その表現が極めて不適切となるのです。

例えば段階的に各界層を通過して上昇して行くと述べた場合、あたかも一地点から次の地点へ、さらに次の地点へと、平面上を進むのと同じ表現をしていることになります。ですが実際は吾々の念頭にある界層は〝地帯〟というよりは〝球体〟と表現した方がより正確です。

なぜなら、繰り返しますが、高い界層は低い界層の全てを包んでおり、その界に存在するということは低い界の全てに存在するということでもあるからです。

その意味で〝神は全てであり、全ての中に存在し、全てを通じて働く〟という表現、つまり神の遍在性を説くことはあながち間違ってはいないのです。

　どうやら吾々はこのテーマに無駄な努力を費やし過ぎている感じがします。地球的規模の知識と理解力を一つの小さなワイングラスに譬えれば、吾々はそれに天界に広がる広大なブドウ畑からとれたブドウ酒を注がんとしているようなもので、この辺でやめておきましょう。

一つだけお互いに知っておくべきことを付け加えておきますが、その天界のブドウ園の園主（宇宙神）も園丁（神々）も霊力と叡智において絶対的信頼のおける存在であるということです。

人生はその神々の世界へ向けて果てしない旅であり、吾々は目の前に用意された仕事に精を出し、完遂し、成就し、それから次の仕事へと進み、それが終わればすぐまた次の仕事が待っている。かくして、これでおしまいという段階は決して来ない。

向上すればするほど〝永遠〟あるいは〝終わりなき世界〟という言葉に秘められた意味の真実性を悟るようになります。しかし貴殿にそこまで要求するのは酷というものでしょう。失礼な言い分かも知れませんが。

　では再び来れることを希望しつつお別れします。ささやかとは言え天界の栄光の一端をこうして聞く耳を持つ者に語りかけることが出来るのは有難いことであり、楽しいことでもあります。どうか、死後に待ち受ける世界は決して黄昏に包まれた実体なき白日夢の世界ではないことを確信していただきたい。そしてそのことを聞く耳を持つ者に伝えていただきたい。

断じてそのような世界ではないのです。そこは奮闘と努力の世界です。善意と努力とが次々と報われ成就される世界です。父なる神へ向けて不屈の意志を持って互いに手を取り合って向上へと励む世界です。

その神の愛を吾々は魂で感じ取り鼓舞されてはおりますが、そのお姿を排することも出来ず、その玉座は余りに崇高なるが故に近づくことも出来ません。

　吾々は向上の道を必死に歩んでおります。後に続く者の手を取ってあげ、その者のスソをその後に続く者が握りしめて頑張っております。友よ、吾々も奮闘していることを忘れないでいただきたい。まさに奮闘なのです。貴殿と、そして貴殿のもとに集まる人々と同じです。

吾々が僅かでも先を行けば、つい遅れがちなる人も大勢おられることでしょう。どうかそういう方たちの手を貴殿がしっかりと握ってあげていただきたい──優しく握ってあげていただきたい。貴殿自身も同じ人間としての脆（もろ）さを抱えておられることを忘れてはなりません。

そして、例えあなたに荷が過ぎると思われても決して手を離さず、上へ向けて手を伸ばしていただきたい。そこには私がおり、私の仲間がおります。絶対に挫折はさせません。

ですから明るい視野を持ち、清らかな生活に徹することです。挫折するどころか、視野が燦然たる輝きを増すことでしょう。聖書にもあるではありませんか──心清き者は幸なり。神を見ればなり、と。（マタイ5・8）

Fine splashes are scattered in the form of mist, and they shine brilliantly in the sunlight. If we look at the situation and express it as "innumerable splashes", then how should we express the sea itself where the splashes return?


The glittering stars in the sky are nothing more than the splash of the sea from the perspective of the entire universe. That is also a visible surface story. Just as the world of the deep and deep seabed spreads under the surface of the sea that splashes, the universe also spreads the world of deep and deep spirits in the depths of the physical world that is visible to the human eye.


Let's move on a little further. In the first place, the term "universe" itself is used for convenience to express something that cannot be expressed after all.
