記憶　記憶は脳のなかになく、エーテルのなかに保存される。自己の精神をつぶさに観察し反省する習慣を身につけた者は、こうしたマイヤーズ霊の示唆にむしろ同意するのではなかろうか。御承知のように類似の観点がベルグソンの『物質と記憶』（" Essai sur les données immédiates de la Conscience " 1889）のなかに述べられている。

われわれは少なくともイメージの現われたり消えたりするところまでは自己観察できるわけであって、そうした出現と消滅の過程を眺める限り、マイヤーズ霊の霊界からの指摘に格別な違和感を持たないように思える。記憶がエーテル体の中に保存される様をマイヤーズは次のように述べている。

　あなた方のまわりに巨大な蜘蛛の巣があると想像せよ、この蜘蛛の巣の糸が記憶ないし、想念を、あたかも電線が電信を送るように脳髄に運ぶ。というよりむしろ、精妙体の援助で幽的流動体の上に刻印されたイメージの信号を脳に送るといった方がよい。（『不滅への道』一三二頁）　

　また同じ「記憶」の章のところで、イメージを思い出すためには「適切な努力をもって幽糸とイメージを引き寄せ」ることが必要だと述べられている。


＊この章でトム・ジョーンズの名前の想起に関して記されたところは、書記の一部が抜け落ちているのか、マイヤーズのいう通訳上の間違いがあるためか、文意がよく伝わらない。

そのまま受け取ると、イメージの想起に関してそのつど幽的流動体に新たな刻印がなされるような印象を受ける。しかしイメージは記憶段階で既に幽的流動体の上に刻印されている筈である。従って記憶の際のことが混同されているような感じもする。

また精妙体（といっても身体のことではなく、訳語の「体」は物体などのときの「体」のつもりである。精妙質と言った方がよいかもしれない）の働きについてもよく分からない。精妙なエーテル質（エーテルにも何段階かあるらしい）に記憶されたイメージが幽的流動体のところにやってくるというようにも考えられる。大事な点であるが保留にせざるをえない。

また言語の記憶される場所および言語とイメージの関係づけられる場所についても述べられていないが、これはやはり幽的流動体のなかと考えてよいであろう。

　冥府において地上記憶はすべて再現され、魂はそこを通り過ぎるあいだに記憶による自己の生涯の点検をする。これがいわゆる閻魔庁の鏡にあたるのであろう。マイヤーズは長い画廊のイメージでこれを語っている。

　幻想界では地上記憶が魂の環境の大部分を構成している。幻想界は地上経験による魂の欲求不満をとりあえず満たす場所であるらしい。冥府と共に一種の補正期間の役割をしているようである。この段階では魂は類魂の大記憶とは殆ど接触がない。魂はまだ類魂の目的とするところにも気づかずにいる。


＊幻想界は全体が一種の睡眠期と名づけてよいのかもしれない。冥府が概して地上記憶からの「苦」を受け取る場所とすれば、幻想界は地上記憶から「快」を受け取る場所ともいえよう。

しかしオリバー・ロッジが「まだほかにも進歩の低い段階の人や、よからぬ考えを持った人の行くべき所があるのであるが･･････」というように、マイヤーズの伝える冥府と幻想界のあいだに幻想界下部ともいうべき所が（他の霊界通信を参照すれば）あるとも思われる。

　色彩界はまず地上記憶の破壊、ついでエーテル界における形態の再創造、そして創造物の形態の理想化の時期である。魂は類魂のそれを意識してその存在の意図を漠然とながら悟るとともに、類魂の記憶である大記憶に次第に近づき、魂は時々この大記憶のなかに入って他の類魂の仲間の記憶を学習する。

魂の進歩にとって直接関係のない記憶はすべて類魂の記憶のなかに預けられてしまっている。そのため、この界の魂が地上と通信するときは、大記憶の中に自己の記憶を取り戻しにいくという。


　＊この大記憶のなかに入るときは───地上に通信するときもそうだが───魂は地上にあるときの催眠状態にも似たマイヤーズの名付ける主観状態（第一、睡眠状態、第二、主観状態、第三、通常意識───前掲書一六六頁）で行くというが、このことは重要である。

こうした意識の変容状態は地上におけるような例外的な状態ではなく、高次世界の魂の生活にとっては必須のものだということになる。魂と魂が同一化する際の必要技能といってもよかろう。

私自身審神者として交霊に立ち会うときの経験からいえば、霊媒に憑かる霊がこうした催眠に似た状態にあり、現界の人の指示に従いやすい状態であることをしばしば観察している。

　第五界には大記憶がある。他界の魂ばかりではなく地上の人も例の特殊な意識状態で魂の記憶のなかに入ってゆくことがありうる。交霊のときに出現した霊の記憶を探るのがしばしば霊媒の方の役目であるというのも面白い。心霊研究者の推測と一致するからである。


霊媒は参会者の記憶の中からも霊の過去についての資料を探り出すという。この辺も研究者の知っておくべき点である。高次の霊が未来について一度考えたこともまた類魂の大記憶のなかに保存されている。地上の能力者がこれを読み取れば未来予知も可能なことになる。

　第六界以上の記憶については書き記すこともあまりない。第四界にいるというマイヤーズ霊の記述も第六界以上のことについては漠然としている。

　形態
　 肉体には複体（エーテル体、統一体、幽的流動体などと呼ばれる）が重なり合い、浸透しあって存在している。肉体は物質界における魂の形態的表現であり、複体は魂と肉体の媒体として存在し、相互の連関を可能ならしめる。また物質である肉体に全体的な統一を与えているのはこの複体である。

複体は霊的世界から生命素の供給を受けており、これの供給が絶たれると人間は死ななければならない。また複体は類魂からの高次の意志や、マイヤーズによって「反射」と呼ばれている指示や示唆を受け取っており、これを複体流のイメージに翻訳、翻案、時としては変形する。



Memory
Memories are stored in ether, not in the brain. Those who have acquired the habit of observing and reflecting on their own spirits may rather agree with these suggestions of the Myers spirit. We can observe ourselves, at least to the point where the image appears and disappears, and as far as we can see the process of its appearance and disappearance, it seems that there is no particular discomfort in the indications from the spirit world of the Myers spirit. Myers states that the memory is preserved in the etheric body:


Imagine that there is a huge spider web around you, I don't remember the thread of this spider web, and I carry my thoughts to my brain as if an electric wire sends a telegraph. Rather, it is better to send the signal of the image imprinted on the ghost fluid to the brain with the help of the subtle body. ("The Road to Immortality", p. 132)


Also, in the same "Memory" chapter, it is stated that in order to remember the image, it is necessary to "attract the ghost thread and the image with appropriate efforts".




* The part of the secretary's recollection of Tom Jones's name in this chapter is not well understood, perhaps because of a mistake in the interpretation of Myers.


If you receive it as it is, you will get the impression that a new engraving will be made on the mysterious fluid each time regarding the recall of the image. However, the image should have already been imprinted on the mysterious fluid at the memory stage. Therefore, I feel that things in memory are confused.


Also, the function of the delicate body (although it is not the body, but the translated word "body" is meant to be the "body" when it is an object, etc., may be better called delicate quality). I do not understand. It is also conceivable that the image memorized in the delicate ether (it seems that there are several stages in ether) comes to the mysterious fluid. It's an important point, but I have to put it on hold.


Nor is it mentioned where the language is memorized and where the language is associated with the image, but it can still be thought of as a mysterious fluid.


All ground memories are reproduced in the Netherworld, and the soul inspects its own life by memory while passing there. This would be the mirror of the so-called Enma Agency. Myers talks about this in the image of a long gallery.


In the fantasy world, earthly memory constitutes most of the environment of the soul. The fantasy world seems to be a place to satisfy the frustration of the soul due to ground experience for the time being. It seems that it plays a role of a kind of correction period together with the Netherworld. At this stage, the soul has little contact with the great memory of the soul. The soul is still unaware of the purpose of the soul.




* The whole fantasy world may be named as a kind of sleep period. If the underworld is generally the place to receive "pain" from terrestrial memory, the fantasy world can be said to be the place to receive "pleasure" from terrestrial memory.


However, Oliver Lodge says, "There are other places to go for people who are still in the low stage or who have strange ideas ...", the underworld that Myers tells us. It seems that there is a place (referring to other spirit world communications) that can be called the lower part of the fantasy world between the fantasy world.


The color world is the time of the destruction of earthly memory, then the re-creation of form in the ether world, and the idealization of the form of creation. The soul is conscious of that of the soul and vaguely realizes the intention of its existence, and gradually approaches the great memory that is the memory of the soul, and the soul sometimes enters into this great memory and is a companion of other souls. All memories that are not directly related to the progress of the soul are entrusted to the memories of the souls. Therefore, when the soul of this world communicates with the earth, it is said that it will regain its own memory in the great memory.

From my own experience of witnessing séances, I often observe that spirits possessed by mediums are in a state similar to this hypnosis and are easy to follow the instructions of people in the world.


The fifth world has a great memory. Not only the souls of other worlds but also the people on earth may enter into the memory of the souls in the special state of consciousness. It is also interesting that it is often the role of the medium to explore the memories of the spirits that appeared during the séance. This is because it is consistent with the psychic researcher's guess.




It is said that the spirit medium seeks out materials about the past of the spirit from the memories of the participants. This is also a point that researchers should know. What the higher spirits once thought about the future is also preserved in the great memory of the souls. If a person with the ability on the ground reads this, it will be possible to predict the future.


There is not much to write about the memories of the sixth world and above. The description of the Myers spirit of being in the Fourth World is also vague about things beyond the Sixth World.


Form
Simplicial complexes (called etheric bodies, unified bodies, ghost fluids, etc.) overlap and permeate into the physical body. The body is a morphological expression of the soul in the physical world, and the complex exists as a medium between the soul and the body, enabling mutual connection. It is this complex that gives the physical body, which is a substance, an overall unity.


The complex receives a supply of life elements from the spiritual world, and if this supply is cut off, humans must die. The complex also receives higher wills from the souls and instructions and suggestions called "reflections" by Myers, which are translated, adapted, and sometimes transformed into complex-style images.
