それどころかその考え方（信念）と自分を同一化すればするほど、自分のなかのスピリチュアルな面から切り離されていく。「信仰心が篤い」人たちの多くはこのレベルに留まっている。思考を真実と同一視し、その思考に自分を完全に同一化しているので、自分だけが真実を知っていると主張するが、実は無意識のうちに自分のアイデンティティを守ろうとしているだけのことだ。
この人たちは思考の限界に気づかない。自分の行動と信念に完全に同意しない人間は間違っていると決めつける。新しいスピリチュアリティ、意識の変容は、たいてい制度化された宗教の外で起こる。思考と概念に支配されたこれまでの宗教でも、その一部には必ずささやかなスピリチュアリティが宿る場所があった。
しかし宗教構造の外側で生じたスピリチュアリティの大きなうねりとなるとまったく新しい現象で、これまでは、とくに西欧では考えられなかった。西欧文明はすべての文明のなかでも最も理性を重視する文明だったし、スピリチュアリティに関しては事実上キリスト教の教会による独占体制が確立していたからだ。
教会の許しもなくいきなり立ち上がってスピリチュアルな話をしたらたちまち沈黙させられただろう。ところがいまでは教会や宗教のなかにも変化の兆しが現れている。既成宗教の外側で盛り上がってきたスピリチュアルな教えの影響に加え、古い東洋の知恵が流れ込んだことも大きな力となって、伝統的な宗教の信者にも形や教義、硬直した信念体系へのこだわりを捨て、スピリチュアルな伝統に隠されていた深さや自分自身の深さを発見する人たちが増えてきた。
この人たちは自分が「スピリチュアル」かどうかは何を信じているかではなく、どんな意識の状態にあるかによって決まることに気づいている。そしてそれがその人の行動や人間関係を決定する。形を超えた向こう側を見ることができないひとたちは、自分の信念に、つまり自分のエゴイスティックな心にいっそう深く囚われてしまう。
一部の教会、宗派、カルト、宗教運動は基本的には集団のエゴで、自分たちの主義主張に頑固にしがみつく。だが、エゴは解体される運命にある。その硬直化した構造は、宗教であれその他の制度、企業、政府であれ、一見どれほど強固に見えようとも内側から崩れていくだろう。
